Regions

As you can see on this AIATSIS (Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies) map of Indigenous Australia there are many different language groups in Australia all with their own unique culture and ways. Because of this it’s not surprising that all these regions have their own artistic styles.

Aboriginal artists often need cultural permission to paint a particular story. This permission may be from their Elders (Aboriginal leaders), communities or members of their families. Those stories can have important sacred and secret information. So artists can’t paint a story that does not belong to them through family or language group lineage. That is why there is so much diversity in Aboriginal art as you can see on this webshop.
