This is Purnululu (the Bungle Bungles) country. The colours of this part of our country change all the time – from pink in the morning, bright red and orange in the hot summer time, brown before the rain, black during the storms and green when the grass grows after the first rain. Every time you go there, it looks different.
It’s just like magic – you can paint the same place at a different time of the day or year, and it’s the colours that make it never look the same. This is a very important part of the Kitja country and because it is right next to Texas Downs which is my family’s country, we all paint it. Uncle Jack (Britten) made this place famous with his paintings from the beginning.
Charlene is definitely one of the most talented, exciting young artists in Australia. Born in Perth in 1977, she grew up at Warmun Community, Turkey Creek, Western Australia.
